The Advisory Group on Economic Recovery (AGER) was established in April 2020 by the Scottish Government. The Group will provide independent, expert advice on Scotland’s economic recovery once the immediate emergency, created by coronavirus, has subsided.

Led by Benny Higgins, the Group will consider how economic recovery can increase wellbeing, fairness and inclusivity, and make the most of opportunities towards a greener, net-zero society.

The Advisory Group recently launched an open call for views to ensure that its recommendations are informed by a broad range of perspectives from businesses and communities across Scotland. The Group is expected to provide initial proposals by the end of June 2020.

David Watt wrote to the Group, as Chair of The Scottish Forum on Natural Capital, to share our thoughts on priorities for a green recovery. We believe it is vital to link economic recovery support to conditions that require investment in our natural capital, founded on the need to meet the challenges of both the biodiversity and climate change emergencies. Such a holistic, joined-up approach, would ensure that our economic recovery is truly a “green” one.
